William was the son of Thomas John ANDREWS & Sarah Ellen STUBBS and was born on the 4th of October 1874 in Ropley, Hampshire, England.
William was the third child born into this family of 10 children.
By 1891 William had gained employment as a house servant and joined the Hampshire Volunteer Regiment.
William married Sarah Jane HOPKINS in 1895 in Basingstoke.
Sarah was the daughter of George HOPKINS & Sarah DUFFIN and was born in 1875 in Dummer, Hampshire, England.
They moved to 481 Coleridge Road, Attercliffe, and William gained employment as a steel work labourer.
By 1911 they had moved to Springwell Street, Hushwater, Nottinghamshire where William was employed as a detailer in the Coal Mine.
The following year they immigrated to South Australia and on the 13th of January 1914 they purchased a home in Wigley Street, Largs Bay and William gained employment as a woodworker.
At the age of 42, William enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 4th of August 1915 in Adelaide, SA and allotted the service number 3006 and posted to A Company, 2nd Depot Battalion in Mitcham Camp.
On the 16th of September he was transferred to the 27th Battalion, 7th Reinforcements and then embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A7 Medic on the 12th of January 1916. He disembarked in Alexandria on the 16th of February and marched into Tel-el-Kebir Camp for training.
William embarked from Alexandria on the 21st of March with the reinforcements and disembarked in Marseilles 6 days later.
He suffered from Sciatica and was hospitalised before being transferred to England on the 13th of May 1916.
He was then attached to No.2 & No.3 Command Depots as Permanent Establishment.
William embarked from England on the 4th of May 1917 on board HMAT Runic, disembarked in Adelaide on the 1st of July and was discharged, medically unfit, from the AIF on the 1st of August 1917.
William returned to Sarah and regained employment as a labourer.
They sold their home in Wigley Street, Largs Bay, in June 1919 and purchased a home at 505 Military Road, Largs Bay and William joined the Largs Bay RSL Sub-Branch.
William died on the 3rd of June 1959 and Sarah buried him the following day in the Cheltenham Cemetery; Section T, Drive D, Path 15, Site Number 118S.
Sarah died on the 19th of August 1964 and was buried Cheltenham Cemetery; Section T, Drive D, Path 15, Site Number 118S, with William.
Military
At the age of 42, William enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 4th of August 1915 in Adelaide, SA and allotted the service number 3006 and posted to A Company, 2nd Depot Battalion in Mitcham Camp.
He listed his wife, of Wigley Street, Largs Bay, as his next of kin.
On the 16th of September he was transferred to the 27th Battalion, 7th Reinforcements.
William embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A7 Medic on the 12th of January 1916, disembarked in Alexandria on the 16th of February and marched into Tel-el-Kebir Camp for training.
At this time the 27th Battalion was located near Ismalia on the Asiatic Shore in defensive positions.
On March 14th they entrained for Alexandria, being part of the first Australian force to leave for Europe. Their Brigade was given pride of place, and they embarked on the troopship Northland on March 15th for Marseilles.
William did not embark with them; instead he embarked from Alexandria on the 21st of March with the reinforcements and disembarked in Marseilles 6 days later.
He then entrained 630 miles to the 2nd ADBD (Australian Division Base Depot) in Etaples and whilst here, on the 10th of April, he suffered from Sciatica and was admitted into the 26th General Hospital in Etaples.
On the 13th of May William was transferred to England on board HS Stad Antwerpen and admitted into the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield.
He was discharged to fulo on the 6th of June and then readmitted into the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital on the 24th of July.
On the 3rd of August he was discharged to duty at No.2 Command Depot in Weymouth on Permanent Establishment.
He remained here until the 16th of April 1917 and was then transferred to No.3 Command Depot in Hurdcott, for duty.
William embarked from England on the 4th of May 1917 on board HMAT Runic and disembarked in Adelaide on the 1st of July.
He was discharged, medically unfit, from the AIF on the 1st of August 1917 and awarded the British War & Victory Medals.
