31 Jan 1919: | Honoured Military Cross, Breaching the Hindenburg Line - Cambrai / St Quentin Canal, During the period 30th August to 5th September 1918, he displayed great gallantry and determination in the difficult operation of crossing the Somme. He led two patrols under heavy fire in unsuccessful atempts to find a passage through the marsh, and again, a third time, he was driven back by intense machine gun fire. He was in temporary command of a battalion which had suffered heavy casualties in officers, and, making a fourth attempt, he at last succeeded in working to the eastern edge of the swamp, and driving the enemy from his posts, thus securing the passage of the river. His gallantry under fire and persevering energy were worthy of the highest praise. | |
