Son of Thomas James Uren and Esther Uren nee Davis of Waratah Street, Mayfield, NSW.

19 October 1914 - enlisted at Broadmeadows, Victoria, with the 4th Field Ambulance and with the rank of Driver

1 July 1916 - promoted to Sergeant

25 February 1918 - returned to Australia aboard HT Port Lyttleton disembarking on 25 December 1918

25 February 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District.

An Original Anzac who served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

60 years ago today, on the 24th October 1963, Sergeant Hilford Uren, 4th Australian Field Ambulance (Reg No-2029), locomotive cleaner (Hamilton Loco Sheds), from Waratah Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and 97 Kings Road, New Lambton, N.S.W. (1953), father of two (Lynda Mary, died 6.2.1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., aged 13 months, a Bud in Heaven, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-18. 127, and Daphne Yvonne Swiatyj nee Uren, buried 28.8.2003, ANGLICAN 3-192. 53, no inscription on headstone, with husband Peter, buried 7.6.1989), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. ANGLICAN 3-192. 52.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 27th March 1894 to Thomas James - ANGLICAN 1-18. 129 and Esther Uren nee Davis - ANGLICAN 1-18. 127, of 40 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales; husband of Florence May Uren nee Boag (married 1919, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 24.12.1953, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 53, sleeping here), Hilford enlisted on the 19th October 1914 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A35 Berrima on the 22nd December 1914.

Hilford mentioned in a letter (see Links) sent home regarding the death of Private John Francis McQuillan, born 12.12.1893, Greta, New South Wales, clerk from 15 Junction Street, Merewether, New South Wales, enlisted 19.10.1914, same day as Hilford, an Original Anzac, 4th Australian Field Ambulance, Reg No-2003, DOW 12.12.1917, his 24th birthday, resting at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XXI Row A Grave No. 19.

Service record gives no indication of wounds or illness.
Hilford returned home on the 25th December 1918 (Special 1914 Leave), being discharged on the 25th February 1919.

Mr. Uren’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Loco Employees Roll of Honour, Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Hilford’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
