Phillip Leslie West Stephens
When Phillip Leslie West Stephens was born on 19 August 1891 in Wallaroo Mines, South Australia, his father, John, was 25 and his mother, Sarah, was 26. He was the oldest child. His father John, a miner, died in Boulder Western Australia during a mining accident in 1903 aged 37 and his mother who was living in Wallaroo with his siblings had to seek employment as a cook. My grandmother Elizabeth who was the eldest daughter had to leave school to raise her siblings, Olive, Vera, John, Phillip, and Cecil. Phillip Leslie West Stephens married Isabella Jane (Jean) Dempsey in Port Pirie, South Australia, on 28 October 1914 when he was 23 years old.
After WW1 Phillip returned to SA and lived in Port Pirie with his wife. He was a butcher and had two sons during his marriage. His first son Don Kevin was born on 17 August 1915 in Port Pirie and died the following year. His second son Ray was born in 1920 in Port Pirie, South Australia. Ray STEPHENS died on 24 June 1939 in Port Pirie, South Australia, when he was 19 years old following an accident. He died of cancer on 14 April 1955 in Adelaide, South Australia at the age of 63, and was buried with his mother Sarah Jane Stephens (Tremberth) and sister Vera Sophia in Centennial Park, South Australia.
