Arthur Rhodes PERRY (Service Number 3447) was born at Goulburn in May 1891. He commenced work with the Tramways as an electrical junior on 14th August 1908 but resigned at the end of March 1913. His role at that time was described as labourer. At the end of 1914 he was employed as a temporary labourer with the Railways.
He enlisted on 5th July 1916, describing himself as an electrician. He embarked from Sydney on 21st January 1917 on HMAT ‘Anchises’, disembarking at Devonport, UK. He joined the 53rd Battalion in France in August 1917.
On 27th September 1917, near Ypres, he received a gunshot wound to his left ankle. He was passed through the 3rd Field Ambulance and the 10th Casualty Clearing Station to the 11th USA General Hospital and then to England where his left leg was amputated. Many months later, in July 1918, he was returned to Australia and discharged from the army.
Perry died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Camperdown in Sydney) from Influenza on 2nd April 1919 and was buried two days later in the Church of England Cemetery, Waverley.
Since his early death was not related to his war service, Perry’s name is not included in the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. His name is however included in both the Sydney Station Honour Board and the NSW Government Railways and Tramways printed Honour Roll.
