Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College
William Henry White was born on the 8th of November 1876. His parents were Henry White and Julia Henrietta White. His father Henry being his nominated next of Kin. He was born in the suburb of Thebarton, South Australia. William went to the local school, Thebarton Primary School. Whites job before the war was a Stockman at the business of Messrs. Bennet and Fisher.
However, this wasn’t the first time he has served in the army. William served during the South African war or the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. All we know is that he was a part of the fifth contentment. War experience was valuable to the army because someone with war experience knows how to deal and adapt to war conditions, landscape and brutality.
William enlisted in the army as a Light Horsemen at the Oaklands Camp, South Australia on the 9th of January 1915. He was enlisted in the 11th Light horse Regiment due to his horse riding skills. He departed to Egypt for training on the HMAT A7 Medic from Brisbane Queensland.
William was TOS (taken on strength) or transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment on the 29th of August 1915. William was a reinforcement for the already fighting soldiers at Gallipoli. On 6th September 1915 he was promoted to Lance Corporal.
William Henry White was wounded 16th of September 1915 with a gun shot wound to his abdomen. He was evacuated to the No. 16 Casualty clearing station where he died.
In total, William spent only 6 months of the total of 9 months the Gallipoli campaign lasted for and was involved in World War one for the same amount of time.
When he passed, letters were sent to his mother and father informing them about his passing, and where he is buried. His mother (Julia) was sent a letter from the Office of recordsin May 1924 informing her where he would be commemorated with a permanent headstone table in the Embarkation Peir Cemetery, Anzac, Gallipoli
