Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Cyril was the son of William Robert and Annie Mary Brooks, of Tamworth, New South Wales. Before enlisting he was employed by Messrs. Treloar and Co. of Tamworth. Treloar’s was the largest store in Tamworth at the time, general merchants, employing over 25 people.
Cyril was said to have made nine attempts to enlist, having been refused on eight occasions.
Cyril’s younger brother, who was also employed at Treloar’s store, 4596 Pte. George Victor Brooks 3rd Battalion AIF, also died of wounds at Bullecourt 7 May 1917, aged 21. They were the only two children.
Cyril was wounded in action at Pozieres on 26 July 1916, gunshot wounds to his eyes, hand and knee. He was removed to the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne, France on 5 August 1916. He died of his wounds twelve days later, after developing streptococcal meningitis.
