58 years ago today, on the 19th August 1965, Private Richard Venner (Venor) Southon, referred to as Dick, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2399), carpenter from Woodstock Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. ANGLICAN 1-28A. 88. Not married.

Born at Waratah, New South Wales on the 17th June 1893 to Thomas Charlton and Eveline (Evelyne, Eva, Emiline, Evelyn) Lilly Southon nee Judge, Dick enlisted on the 4th May 1916 at Waratah, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Note - also mentions Private David Alexander Gillespie, also a carpenter from Turton Road, Waratah, New South Wales, enlisted 26.4.1916, 35th Battalion, Reg No-2319, wounded in action - 8.6.1917 (shell shock, Battle of Messines), RTA 10.8.1919, died 24.9.1966, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 72, not officially commemorated).
Wounded in action - 2.10.1917 (GSW right leg, right eye, mild).

Invalided to England 16.1.1918.

Returned to Australia for discharge, 8.4.1918.

Dick returned home on the 28th May 1918, being discharged medically unfit (GSW right eye) on the 30th July 1918.

Mr. Southon’s name has been inscribed on the Mayfield Public School Honour Roll.

Not officially commemorated.

I have placed poppies at Dick’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Cyril Spencer (born 1898, Mayfield, New South Wales, driver and labourer from Woodstock Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, enlisted 9.8.1915, Warwick Farm Depot, B Coy. 8th Battalion, Reg No- N76090, discharged 20.9.1915 (10 days service, medically unfit, rheumatism), reenlisted 12.6.1917, discharged physically unfit, 15.6.1917, also resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 2-57. 57.
