John Thomas Tebby was the son of John Tebby and Keturah Dunlop. The family lived at Woody point and John attended Humpybong State School. He enlisted in September 1914. John married Elizabeth Anne White in 1921 and worked as a motor mechanic after the war. His father, John Tebby a munitions worker, lived at Woody Point.

Mr. Arthur Ashmore writes stating that steps are being taken to bring under the notice of the Royal Humane Society the bravery of Mr. John Thomas Tebby, the young engineer of the Olivine, in rescuing a passenger from drowning on 10th instant. - 26 June 1914
