Arthur Joseph Ward was born in Adelaide, South Australia. Arthur attended Millbrook Public School and later worked as a labourer, a physically demanding and common job at the time. He was 39 years and 1 month old when he enlisted. According to his medical examination form, he had blue eyes, stood 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighed 138 pounds.

Arthur enlisted on 25 April 1916. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on 21 September 1916. He served in the 50th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement.

Later, he was transferred to the 27th Infantry Battalion during the Third Ypres campaign. Arthur Joseph Ward was killed in action on 20 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, Ypres, Belgium and has no known grave.
