Albert Deal enlisted at 45 years of age. His first battle on the Western Front was the attack on Mouquet Farm with the 51st Battalion, on 3 September 1916, a hard-fought fight which cost the battalion very heavy casualties.
In July 1922, one of the sergeants of the 51st Battalion wrote a letter to the Perth Australian newspaper describing some of the brave acts he witnessed.
“…That day, old Dad Deal plodded along through heavy shell fire with a tin of water to an isolated Lewis gun post. To see him, one would have thought he was back on his old carpenter's job on the railways for all the notice he took of the shells…”
Albert, known as ‘Dad’ to his younger comrades, fell sick late in 1916 and he was transferred to lighter duties, and he was returned to Australia early in 1918.
