Son of Edward Francis Vale and Jessie Weir Vale nee Johnston of Canning Street, North Carlton, Victoria. 

Brother of William David Vale who was killed in action on 7 June 1917 while serving with the 45th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres. Panel 27

Commenced return to Australia on 8 August 1916 aboard HT Marathon disembarking on 24 September 1916
