Harold Ronald Gannoni was born in Norwood, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on the 24th September 1892. Before enlisting in the war, he was single with no kids and worked as a clerk. He enlisted on the 6 February 1915 and was placed into the 10th infantry battalion with the service number of 1942. Harold Ronald Gannoni attended Leonard’s college and was of Baptist denomination. Harold Ronald Gannoni worked as a clerk before the war, Harold was 22 years old when he enlisted in the Army.

 

Described on enlisting as 22 years 4 months old; single; 5’ 1 3/4; 126 lbs.; dark complexion; brown eyes and Baptist (religious denomination).

 

Harold embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A20, Harold departed on 20th April 1915.

 

ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Harold displayed many qualities of an ANZAC during the war; the qualities of an ANZAC includes endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humor and mateship. Through the bloody times of the war, it was the legend of the ANZAC spirit that kept many soldiers alive and it have them comfort. The ANZAC spirit gave hope to those that lost it and gave all soldiers determination to win the war. The ANZAC spirit is; The ANZAC legend is a concept of the characteristics possessed by the Australian and New Zealand soldiers. Even if they were defeated these characteristics kept them moving.

 

Harold was not involved with many major events that showed ANZAC spirit, although I vision it differently. Harold signing up for to fight for his country is a major form of ANZAC spirit. There were more than half a million of young old men and women who fought for their country. They all shows true ANZAC spirit. They all did little things that showed ANZAC spirit, but we should still acknowledge those who did great for our country.

 

Harold was awarded three medals. These included the 1914/15 Star Medal, British War medal, and the Victory Medal. The Star Medal was a campaign medal awarded to those who enlisted in the years 1914/15 for service in World War I. All men and women who enlisted in World War I was issued with the British War Medal. The Victory Medal was also issued to all those who served to celebrate the defeat of the Germans. The soldier's regiment and number are inscribed around the rim of the medal.

 

There is little know about Harold’s post-war life; there is only one piece of confirmed information. Harold married Nurse Emily GANNONI after the war. Harold’s status in unknown.
