Private Lake T. Cardew was born in Woollahra NSW on the 24th of December 1890. 

He was the fifth of six children born to mother Clarissa Reynell (nee Gusson) and licensed surveyor John Hayden between 1881 and 1892.

Private Cardew enlisted in the 2nd Battallion, 9th Reinforcement on the 23rd of June 1915. He served in Tel El Kebir, Egypt, then he transferred to the 54th Battalion on the 14th of February 1916.

Private Cardew arrivied in Marseille on the 29th of June 1916. Three weeks later he died during the Battle of the Somme.

Between the days of 19-20th of July, some 2000 Australian soldiers died while partaking in this offensive in Fleurabix during the battle of the Somme, including Private Cardew.
