Son of James Oates and Rosina Oates nee Chirgwin of Austin Street, Footscray, Victoria.
Brother of Robert Oates who was killed in action on 4 July 1918 while serving with the 15th Battalion. He is buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Plot X11, Row E, Grave 4
