Biography contributed by Judith Cross

Newel Maskel was from the small town of Marungi in Victoria.  He, his brother Frank and friend Leslie Groves travelled together to Melbourne to enlist.

Newel was 23 years old and served in France from November 1916 until December 1918.  During that time he was wounded in action twice.  He described the terrible conditions in his letters home to his parents, several of which were published in the local newspaper.

His friend Leslie Groves was killed in action on 16 April 1917.  On two occasions his brother Frank was reported as killed, but he survived the war and returned to Australia on 26 June 1918.  Frank was gassed on 23 July 1918.

Newel's life during and after the war is outlined in the biography in the attached documents.
