Walter trained with M Group base infantry as a private from 14 July 1915 and transferred to N Group on 16 September and was attached to the 14th Reinforcement 27th Battalion. His unit embarked Star of England from Adelaide on 21 September bound for Egypt, where he served at Tel -el -Kebir from 12 January 1916. His unit was sent to France. On 5 August, during fighting at Pozieres, Walter sustained severe wounds to the lower jaw and face. After receiving initial treatment, he was sent via the Aberdonian to England and admitted to Cambridge Hospital.
Upon being discharged from Cambridge Hospital, Walter was stationed at Perham Downs Camp until November. On 19 July he was treated at the Isolation Hospital at Wareham and in February 1917 was transferred to No.4 Depot at Wareham. He was stationed at No.2 Depot, Weymouth on 12 April.
Walter embarked A71 Nestor for the journey home to Australia on 22 July and was discharged as medically unfit on 26 October 1917.
Throughout his service from July 1915 to October 1917, Walter had served in Egypt, France, and Belgium. He was granted a pension of one pound ten shillings per fortnight as of 27 October 1917.
Walter was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Walter Ernest Wood was born on the 14th of September 1893, and he lived in Kersbrook South Australia which is 41 minutes from the Adelaide CBD. 

Before the war he worked as a labourer.

He enlisted on the 14th of July 1915 joining the 4th reinforcement of the 27th infantry Battalion. His mother Elizabeth Mary Wood was nominated as his next of kin.  He embarked on the 21st of September 1915 from Adelaide on the HMAT A15 star of England. On the 5th of August 1916 he was sent to a hospital in Rouen France with a gunshot wound to the face. A year later he was sent to a field hospital on 13th of February 1917 with the mumps illness.

He returned to Australia on the 22nd of July 1917 after being medically discharged from service. He ended the war with the 1914/15 Star, The British War Medal and The British Victory Medal.
