Charles Percival CALWELL was born on 26th May 1887 in Beaufort, Victoria, the third of ten children to parents Daniel Hogue and Annie (nee CORRIE) CALWELL. His father died in 1903, and mother Annie CALWELL married Moses Walter BETTERIDGE in 1907.
A single 28 year old, who was employed as a labourer at the time, Charles enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Ballarat on 14th February 1916. Enlisted with the rank of Private, regimental number 60, he was allocated to "A" Company of the 39th Infantry Battalion. After completing his recruit training at Ballarat, Charles embarked with his Unit in Melbourne aboard HMAT "Ascanius" on 27th May 1916, arriving in Plymouth England on 18th July.
On 5th August 1916, Charles was transferred to the 10th Light Mortar Battery, with whom he proceeded to France, three months later. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 28th November. Whilst in Pheasant Wood on 1st June 1917, Charles suffered an accidental bullet wound to the right side of his chest and back, following the explosion of an ammunition dump. He was admitted to Birmingham War Hospital on 13th July, and transferred to 3rd Australian Auxilliary Hospital in Dartford, England, a month later.
On 17th August 1917, Charles was discharged from hospital and marched in to the Number 2 Convalescent Depot in Weymouth, England. He remained there until 27th September, when he embarked aboard HMAT "Suevic" for return to Australia. Charles was discharged medically unfit in the 3rd Military District, Melbourne, on 26th December, 1917. He was later awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.
Charles married Margaret Amelia HYATT in Victoria in 1923. He died in Northcote on 28th September 1947, aged 60, and is buried in the Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery, Victoria.
