From Australian Remembrance Army

Corporal Hugh Wiley (Service No. 1326), an Australian World War One veteran, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now marked with plaques in recognition of their service for Australia.

We unveiled his plaque in Lutwyche Cemetery on 15 April 2023, along with a further 246 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Hugh Wiley was born on 27 December 1868 in County Antrim, Ireland, to Hugh Wiley and Maria Wiley (née Whiter). He married Mary Russell in Ireland in 1890.
On 27 January 1917, Hugh enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane. He stated his age as 42 years, although his actual age was 48. His occupation was recorded as engine driver, and he nominated his wife, Mary Wiley, care of the Post Office, Cairns, as next of kin.

On 11 May 1917, he embarked for overseas service with the Railway Unit, 4th Section, aboard HMAT Shropshire from Melbourne. He arrived in England and proceeded to France in October 1917. During his overseas service, he was admitted to hospital on two occasions due to illness.

By January 1919, Hugh was diagnosed with debility (physical weakness). He left England in March 1919 for return to Australia aboard HMAT Khyber and was discharged from the AIF in May 1919.

His wife Mary died at Cooktown in January 1920, aged 49. Electoral and residential records indicate that Hugh was living in Cairns in 1921 and working as an engine driver. By 1928, he was living at Millaa Millaa and employed as an engine cleaner, and in 1930, he was residing in railway quarters at Malanda, North Queensland, working as a labourer. By 1943, Hugh was a resident of the Eventide Nursing Home at Sandgate, Brisbane.

Corporal Hugh Wiley died from heart failure at Taringa, Brisbane, on 28 August 1943, aged 74. He was buried two days later in Anzac Portion 7, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. His death registration records that he had six living children and four deceased children.

After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.

We have remembered him.
