Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

His brother 4139 Pte. Edgar Stanley Howell also of the 25th Battalion was also killed in action on the same day, 5 August 1916. Both bodies of the two brothers were discovered during the course of exhumation work at Pozieres during 1937, and Edwin's disc recovered and sent to his father in the UK. His brother Edgar was also identified by a portion of his identity disc and a silver match box. The brothers were reburied in the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, Picardie, France.
