Service record states he was a blacksmith.
Enlisted 21 Aug 1914, Aged 24 years 2 months – YOB c.1890
Member of 1 Section (i.e. platoon), H Company, 5th Battalion. In his section mate's autograph book (AWM accession number RCDIG0001078), completed en route to EGypt aboard HMAT Orvieto, signed his name as "F.J.T.C. Marchant".
No injuries recorded at ANZAC or Cape Helles.
Traumatic iridectomy / leucoma right eye 15 Jan 1916, which was less than two weeks after 5th battalion had returned to Egypt from ANZAC and Lemnos.
Repatriated to Australia 3 Mar 1916, and did not follow the unit to France.
