Mervyn was the second of three children of George Hicks (born 1865 in Fremantle, Western Australia) and Jane Knapp (born 1863 at Greenough in Western Australia). George and Jane married in 1889 at Fremantle, WA, where George worked as a Storeman and later Porter.

Mervyn was working as a Clerk in Fremantle when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1916, and served as a Private (Service No:297) with 44th and 28th Infantry Battalions in France. He was hospitalised with severe Trench Fever, and was Discharged in June 1919.

Returning to Fremantle, Mervyn was working as a Clerk in 1921 when he married Gladys May Fordham (born 1900 in Fremantle, WA). Mervyn and Gladys lived in Fremantle, where Mervyn worked as a Clerk before moving to Subiaco in Perth in 1930. They lived in Subiaco and Shenton Park, where Mervyn worked as a Clerk and a Buyer. He died in 1970 and Gladys in 1981.
