Athol embarked from Adelaide with his unit, the 27th Battalion on board HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915. He suffered from tonsillitis and Influenza, complaints common to many service personnel, both necessitating hospitalisation in Cairo and France. Athol was promoted to Corporal and later Sergeant while serving in Belgium, where he spent the majority of his war service.
Athol returned to Australia on board the Trasos Montes, disembarking on 20 May 1919 and was discharged on 19 July. He received the 1914/15 Star on 13 November 1920.
