Ernest Chapman Whinfield ARCHIBALD was born in 1896 At Pannoo Bamawm, Victoria

His parents were James ARCHIBALD & Elizabeth Margaret WHINFIELD

He enlisted in Bendigo on 3rd March, 1916 & embarked with the 38th Infantry Battalion on the ship HMAT Runic on 20th June,1916               

He was Killed in Action in France on 5th December, 1916 when he was shot by a sniper - he is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemeteery (Plot IV, Row B, Grave 37)

His brother Harold James ARCHIBALD (SN 504) also served in the 38th Battalion and returned to Australia in 1918
