John Basil Faulkner was born on the 7th June 1891 in Petersburg South Australia. His mother was Mrs Mary Faulkner, and his father was Thomas Faulkner. John had a brother called George Martin Faulkner who served in the 3rd light horse regiment as a private during World War 1 and returned to Australia on the 15th May 1919. John’s occupation before the war was a Labourer. At the time of embarkment he was single and was a Roman Catholic.

He enlisted on the 8th September 1915 when he was 24 and 3/2 years old in Adelaide South Australia. His appearance was described as having brown eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion. He was 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighed 153 lbs (69kg), when his vison was tested it was perfect in both eyes. He embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT Geelong on the 18 November 1915. He was taken on strength to Training Regiment 28 December 1915. John served in the Middle East. 

He went to hospital a few times few times in service including an injury to his right knee, and when he was taken for an x-ray later on because of a fractured patella. He also got transferred to the 3rd light horse battalion then back to the 9th light horse about a month later. John was appointed Lance Corporal in June 1917, and then promoted to Corporal September 1918 then to Sergeant in January 1919.

He was discharged to Moascar on the 12th June 1919 and returned to Australia on the 10th July 1919. He disembarked at Port Adelaide 20 July 1919 and was formally discharged 3 October 1919.

John Basil Faulkner died at the age of 53 on the 9th September 1945 and was buried at the West terrace Cemetery in the AIF section in Adelaide.
