Son of William Charles Upston and Sarah Upston nee Shaw of Evelyn Street, St. Kilda, Victoria.
Brother of William Charles Upston who returned to Australia on 11 October 1918 having served with the 21st Battalion
12 July 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 23rd Battlion and with the rank of Private.
