Driver Joseph Garlick (Service No:3637) enlisted in the AIF at Mornington, Victoria on 7 November 1914 - described in his Attestation Papers (NAA 1914) 'Though light of build I know him to be a healthy hardy active man'. Driver Garlick was atatched to 2 Field Artillery Brigade when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on 25 February 1915 on board HMAT A45 Hessen. On 25 March 1916, Driver Garlick embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, where he served with 1st Divisional Ammunition Column before embarking from Southamption for Melbourne on 14 December 1918 on board HT Burmah. Driver Garlick was atatched to 1st Divisional Ammunition Column at Discharge on 30 March 1919.
Joe was born at Snapper Point in Mornington, Victoria in 1884, fourth of eight children of Joseph Garlick Snr (b1855 in Geelong, Victoria) and Catherine Thompson (b1859 in Moorabbin, Melbourne, Victoria). Joseph moved with his parents and siblings to Mornington in 1863, living near Fisherman's Beach in an area known as Billy Goat Flat (later known as Bendigo by the Sea). Joseph was a Labourer in 1876 when he and Catherine married in Melbourne. They settled at Snapper Point, Mornington where they raised their family and Joseph worked as a Labourer and as Caretaker of Mornington Park.
Joe worked as a Fisherman in Mornington and, following his Discharge from the Army in 1919, married Jessica (Jessie) Gourley (b1887 at Lardner via Warragul, Victoria) - Jessie was living in Melbourne. Joe and Jessie settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and Joe worked as a Fisherman and was active in the Mornington RSL. Joe died in 1963 and Jessie in 1973.
