Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War, an Original Anzac, memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 26th September 1917, Sergeant Robert Elliott, referred to as Bob, 15th Field Company, Australian Engineers (Reg No-114), cooper and carpenter (apprentice for 6 years to E. Stewart & Hawkins, Newcastle West, N.S.W.), from 661 Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell, Glencorse Wood, Battle of Polygon Wood, age 33.
Born at Gosford Road, Hamilton West, New South Wales on the 25th April 1884 to Luke (died 8.2.1895, Adamstown Commonage, N.S.W., age 39, buried at ANGLICAN 1-34. 69, also from Wallsend, N.S.W., photo 9), and Mary Ann Eleanor Elliott nee Embelton (died 5.12.1899, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 41, mother of 8, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-34. 69), Bob enlisted on the 20th August 1914 with the 1st Field Company, Australian Engineers at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A19 Afric on the 18th October 1914.
Admitted to hospital 1.9.1915 (debility not stated).
Furlough to England from 10.12.1916 to 27.12.1916.
Reported Missing in Action 26.9.1917.
Reported KIA 19.10.1917.
Bob’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 7), Belgium.
Place of Association - Hamilton, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
Mr. Elliott’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Book of Gold, The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial. Name should be inscribed on the Newcastle Progressive Carpenters & Joiners Roll of Honour, whereabouts unknown.
Robert has been memorialised at the gravesite of twin brother Luke Elliott (born 25.4.1884, Hamilton West, New South Wales, died 31.12.1933, Lambton, N.S.W., age 49.
Older brother George Elliott (M.S.M., born October 1882?, Newcastle, N.S.W., married locomotive driver from 101 Chandos Street, Haberfield, N.S.W. and 29 Norton Street, Ashfield, N.S.W., enlisted 20.12.1916, 1st Railway Section, 60th Railway Company, Reg No-65, RTA 27.6.1919, 6th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company, died 27.4.1954, Redfern, N.S.W., age 72, not officially commemorated, father listed as William, mother as Ellen) also served 1st A.I.F.
