Add my storyBiography
Born in London about the time of the death of Queen Victoria. Came to Adelaide early in February 1912 a week before his 11th birthday with parents, 2 brothers and a sister and soon settled at Glenelg. For his whole life he barracked for England in cricket and anything else. Put age down a year and enlisted in the Australian Army in WW1 and went into training camp in England, but the war finished before he crossed the English Channel to Europe. Most of his working life he worked for Coldstream Refrigerators at Unley. Never advanced very far in his work but was proud of what he did, cutting sheet steel on guilottine for refrigerator manufacture, and would have been very competent. Was very intelligent and held positions in Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodges in Adelaide, South Australia, including a period as Grand Master. Very sociable person and loved playing poker (and having a beer) with his mates Friday nights. Smoked cigarettes most of his life but still lived to 94 years. Married in 1934, then for 61 years to Olive Constance, nee Cottell and in the 30's ran a dance in Gordon Street Glenelg for a time. They had 2 children Margaret Joan McPhail (1935) and Donald Frederick William Callow (1938). Olive outlived him, dying in 2007 aged 105 years. They had lived in one house at 57 Alison Street St Leonards for about 68 years. Was always an avid reader of fiction.
