Biography contributed by Robert Williamson

"Obituary. Mr. John Matheson

On Wednesday there passed away at Horsham District Hospital Mr. John Matheson, of St. Helens Plains. The deceased, who was 34 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Matheson and was born at Laharum. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday evening suffering from appendicitis, and was operated on Tuesday morning. When the call for men came in the great war he answered it, being three years on active service. He enlisted in the original 38th Battalion, A.I.F., and took his full share of the fighting in France, winning the Military Medal for his actions at Passchendaele Ridge in 1917. On account of sickness he was invalided home in 1918, and was aboard the troopship '"Barunga" when she was torpedoed off the Bay of Biscay, 24 hours sail from Plymouth. The troops were returned to England, and the late Private Matheson subsequently came to Australia on the "Carpentaria."

He took up land at St. Helens under the repatriation scheme. Three years ago he married Miss Phyllis Worthy, who, with two young daughters, are left to mourn their loss. The deceased was a brother of the late Private Ritchie (Dick) Matheson, killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, and Mrs. Navis (Gippsland), Mrs. McKenzie (Melbourne), Mrs. Wilkinson (St. Helens), Mary, Harriett, Hilda, Agnes, Jean and Sam (Laharum). The funeral will leave the Horsham Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock to-day for the Green Lakes Cemetery." - from the Horsham Times 13 Oct 1922 (nla.gov.au)
