Son of Thomas Unstead and Kate Unstead nee Croysdale of Florence Street, Port Pirie, SA.

16 September 1914 - enlisted at Morphettville, SA with the 1st Stationary Hospital with the rank of Private.

8 Ocotber 1916 - promoted to Lance Corporal

1 December 1916 - promoted to Corporal

25 February 1918 - transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxilary Hospital

6 November 1918 - promoted to Sergeant

Commenced return to Australia on 21 December 1918 aboard HT Miltiades disembarking on 5 February 1919

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

7 April 1919 - discharged at the 4th Military District
