Lawrence and his brother Michael were born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and are today honoured on the Kilkenny, MacDonagh Station World War I Memorial under the surname of de Loughry, which is actually quite a common spelling in the UK and Ireland.

Lawrence was a widower aged 39 years and 2 months when he attested and enlisted on 29th May 1917 at Kiama, New South Wales.
Next of kin
Sister, Mrs Mary Watson, Campbell Street, Woonoona, New South Wales.
Returned to Australia 30 August 1918.
