Lawrence and his brother Michael were born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and are today honoured on the Kilkenny, MacDonagh Station World War I Memorial under the surname of de Loughry, which is actually quite a common spelling in the UK and Ireland.

Lawrence was a widower aged 39 years and 2 months when he attested and enlisted on 29th May 1917 at Kiama, New South Wales.
