Leslie Lakeman enlisted when he was only 16 years of age. He joined with the 17th Battalion and transferred to the 55th Battalion when in Egypt prior to going to France. He was severely wounded in the head on 1 April 1917 but lived for over a month before he died of wounds at Rouen in France. He was then 18 years of age.

His older brother, 849 Pte. Allen Michael Lakeman 1st Battalion AIF, had died of wounds at Gallipoli 15 August 1915. Age 23.
