William was initially discharged on 31 March 1916 due to “Having made a false statement as to age on enlistment”- he had enlisted underage without his mother’s consent. This was rectified by 26 October 1916, with his enlistment papers stating “consent attached”. William left Melbourne on 4 August 1917. At Glascow he was admitted with mumps on 3 October prior to proceeding to France on 8 January 1918. William transferred to the 16th Battalion from the 50th Battalion. During action in France on 25 June he suffered a gunshot wound to the head, was invalided to the U.K. and was admitted to Southern General Hospital, Birmingham on 8 July. William returned to Australia on board the Frankfurt on 17 August 1919 and was discharged on 21 March 1920.
