George Arnold was a twenty-five-year-old man when he enlisted. He was a gardener prior to enlisting to the Military Forces and was also a follower of the Church of England (NAA). He was born in Crafers, South Australia, his father being, John Maud Arnold and his mother being, Mary Ann Lee Tobin, who’s residence was also in Crafers, South Australia. He was not married when he enlisted but did eventually get married after World War 1. (State Library)
He signed his enlistment oath on the 7th December, 1914. His recorded physical appearance was 5ft and 60 inches tall, and he weighed 142 pounds. His hair was a light brown colour, and he had a pair of grey coloured eyes with a fair completion.
When George Arnold enlisted, he was transferred to the 11th Light Horse Regiment, Squadron Six which was a Part of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. George later embarked from Australia on the 2nd June, 1915 and disembarked in Alexandria Egypt on 26th December in the same year. He served in the Middle East with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Once the war ended he took leave in the UK and while he was waiting repatriation back to Australia he married Edith Lawson Arnold 17th September 1919 in England. After he was married, he was discharged from his duty as a soldier to the Military Forces of the Commonwealth of Australia on the T13th February 1920.
He died at Prospect 24th July 1965 aged 75. His gravestone states he was a beloved husband of his wife Edith and a loving father of three. His three children being Bob, Pay and Kathleen Arnold.
