Walter Mildren was born on the 2nd of January 1893, and was one of the nine children to Edward King and Margaret Grant Mildren. He was raised a Presbyterian. Walter attended three schools, Berringama, Khancoban Public School, and Towong.
At age 22, Walter enlisted on the 10th of February 1916 at Melbourne, Victoria. He was allocated the Regimental Number of 950, and was placed in the 39th Battalion in C Company. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board the HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 27th of May 1916.
On the 18th of July in 1916, Walter disembarked at Plymouth in Devon, South West England. From midnight on the 19th of October to 10pm on the 21st of October 1916, Walter was 'Absent Without Leave', and as a result, he lost two days worth of pay. On the 22nd of November 1916, Walter proceeded overseas to France. During October, Walter was admitted to hospital numerous times with an inflamed knee. On the 31st of January 1918, he embarked for Australia, after being discharged due to Ostro Arthritis.
Walter returned to Australia on the 31st of January 1918 and married Daphne Mary Gibson in 1926. During 1933, their daughter, Valma Daphne Mildren, was born. It is unknown if they had any other children. On the 26th of July, 1974, Walter died at the age of 81. He was buried in the Corryong Cemetry, Victoria, and is remembered on the the Corryong Wabba & Berringama Districts Pictorial Honour Roll, and the Khancoban District Pictorial Honour Board.
