Oliver Leigh East was born on the 14th of August in 1896 in Mallala South Australia. He lived with his Father Matthew Henry East and his mother Emma East. He was the youngest of his three brothers and one sister. He worked as a Blacksmith before he enlisted at the age of 19 on the 10 February 1916. He served as a Sapper with the 11th Field Company Engineers in France and Belgium.

East returned safely home to Australia 26 May 1919 and was discharged 17 August 1919.

On the 4th of September 1967 Oliver leigh East passed away at the age of 71 years old from natural causes, where he was buried to rest in the Mallala Cemetery.
