Maurice Michael James TANGLEY (Micky) was born to Maurice and Honorah TANGNEY (nee O’CONNELL 1864-1907) in 1897. His parents had married in 1888 in Broken Hill NSW. Hid s father Maurice TANGNEY managed the Gladstone Hotel in Broken Hill. *** It appears he has changed the spelling of TANGNEY to TANGLEY.
Michael TANGLEY had previously been rejected for AIF service due to his height. (date n/k)
Trying again, his enlistment was accepted on 13.06.1917. He was allocated service number 3718 and posted to the 10th reinforcements, 50th Infantry Battalion. The 50th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was originally raised in Egypt in early 1916 for service during World War I, drawing a cadre of experienced personnel from the 10th Battalion.
He embarked for overseas service on 04.08.1917 arriving in Scotland then England and sent to France on 16.01.1918. He returned to Australia on 22.08.1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 21.09.1919.
In 1918, the 50th Battalion took part in the battles of the spring offensive and took a decisive role in the battle of Villers-Bretonneux and the Hindenburg Line.
