Served his carpentary apprenticeship with Thomas Tellisbe of Melbourne, Victoria for eight years.

Husband of Myrtle Olive Orton nee Rowett of  'Ayr', Parnell Street, Strathfield, NSW. Ernest and Myrtle married during 1913c in Sydney, NSW

Returned to Australia on 20 November 1918 due to troopship HT Boonah being recalled, disembarked at Adelaide for onward traavel to Sydney
