Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Thomas Donoghue was the son of Michael and Mary Donoghue of Minjary, near Tumut, New South Wales. His mother died in 1915 aged 72 years after she was accidently burnt and his father, who was an old pioneer of the Tumut-Adelong district, died of a stroke during January 1917, at 80 years of age.

Thomas’s older brother, 5565 Pte. Cornelius Sylvester Donoghue 19th Battalion AIF, died of wounds inflicted at Bullecourt, France, on 4 May 1917, aged 36. Cornelius’s death was only three days before Thomas died of illness.

Thomas Donoghue enlisted at Cootamundra during May 1916 joined the 55th Battalion at the front in February 1917. Private Donoghue was admitted to the 12th General Hospital in Rouen, France on 28 April 1917. On admission he could only speak in a whisper and was in a very emaciated condition, vomiting after his meals. He died from gastro-enteritis at 11.40 a.m. on 7 May 1917 and was buried by the Reverend P.G. Prevost.

He and his brother, Cornelius Sylvester Donoghue, are listed on the Hillston Memorial Park Gates.
