106 years ago today, on the 13th October 1917, Driver John Woods, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2180), miner from 15 Fleming Street, Smedmore, New South Wales, father of two (Augustus Steward Alexandria, Jack), was Killed in Action during the 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium, age 29.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 2nd August 1888 to Augustus Steward Alexandria (died 12.1.1906, Ryde, N.S.W.) and Mary Ann Woods nee Davey (died 1938); husband of Elfreda Ethel Woods nee Chant (married 1911, Wickham, N.S.W, remarried to John Lowe, 1923, Glebe, N.S.W., died 1965, Sydney, N.S.W. as Ilfrida Ethel Lowe?) of Hunter Street, Stockton, New South Wales and Bailey Street, Adamstown, N.S.W. John's son Jack (born 13.4.1913, Islington, N.S.W., died 28.8.1958, Blacksmiths, N.S.W. 

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.
Admitted to hospital 7.12.1916 (influenza).

John’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.

Place of Association - Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr Woods’s name has also been inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honor Board 1 as WOOD, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor and the Book of Gold.
