Victor Walter Mossop

Vic Mossop was my great-uncle. He was the fourth son of James and Emily (Williams). He was a draper by trade, working for John Martin & Co in Adelaide and later also working at Ardrossan.
He was a good all-round athlete, competing in the Commemmoration Day Sports event at Glenelg in December 1908. He was a runner in the Novice and Sheffield events.
He also played football for Ardrossan, being a member of their first Premiership team in 1913.

"LATE SGT-MAJOR MOSSOP.

News of the death of Sgt-Major Mossop has been received at Port Victoria. Prior to enlisting, the deceased soldier used to pay monthly visits to Port Victoria, and had gained the respect and esteem of all with whom he came into contact. He was not of a particularly robust physique, but he felt it was his duty to enlist. News has been received at Ardrossan of the death, from a gunshot wound in the head, of Sgt- Major Victor Mossop. The deceased soldier enlisted from Ardrosaan about two years ago, and was most popular in the district. He was an athlete, and helped in various local causes. 2952 Private (Pte) Victor Walter Mossop, 32nd Battalion. A draper from West Hindmarsh, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) for Suez. While in Egypt he was appointed Acting Corporal on 9 June 1916 and two weeks later the battalion relocated to the Western Front, France. In the following 12 months he progressed through the ranks and was promoted to Company Sergeant Major (CSM) on 2 June 1917. CSM Mossop was wounded in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on 12 October 1917 and died of these wounds three days later in No 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 25 years.
