Died on this date – 11th December……Frederick Keith Johnson was born at Summer Hill, Sydney, New South Wales on 19th April, 1898.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 1st August, 1916 as an 18 year old, single, Clerk from Summer Hill, Sydney, NSW.

As Frederick Keith Johnson was under the age of 21 his parents were required to sign their consent for their son to enlist in active service abroad. Frederick Johnson (father) & Elizabeth A. Johnson (mother) signed the following note: “We, the undersigned, hereby give our consent for our son, Frederick Keith Johnson, enlisting for Active Service in the A.I.E.F.”
On 1st August, 1916 Frederick Johnson was posted to 11th Brigade, 8th Reinforcements for recruit training. He was transferred to 5th D.A.C. (Divisional Ammunition Column), 8th Reinforcements, Field Artillery as Driver on 1st November, 1916.

Driver Frederick Keith Johnson, Service number 30297, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9th November, 1916 with the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, 8th Reinforcements, Australian Field Artillery.

Driver Frederick Keith Johnson died on 11th December, 1916 at Sea on board HMAT Benalla (A24) from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

He was buried at Sea on 11th December, 1916 from HMAT Benalla (A24). He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
