Charles Herman Edward DOLLING was born in Hartley, South Australia on 3rd June 1887

His parents were Gottlieb DOLLING & Johanna Pauline KLAEBSCH

DOLLING Carl Hermann Eduard 6497

Carl was the son of Hermann Gottlob DOLLING & Johanna Pauline KLAEBSCH and was born on the 3rd of June 1887 in Hartley, SA.

Carl was only 3 years old when his father died.

His mother moved the family to Bugle Ranges in 1901 and she was a dairy maid.

His parents were married on the 18th of October 1883 in the Lutheran Church, Hartley, SA. His father was the son of Johannes Gottfried DOLLING & Johanne Louise WOYDT and was born on the 27th of November 1855 in Hahndorf, SA.

His mother was the daughter of Johann Wilhelm KLAEBSCH & Johanne Friedericke BUETTNER and was born on the 7th of December 1856 in Neu Beutnitz, Brandengurg, Prussia.

His eldest brother became a teamster and resided in Bugle Ranges.

Carl was a farm laborer and for some time he was employed on the Nullabor Station, West Coast, where he had charge of the camel trains.

Carl enlisted into the 10th Battalion, on the 31st of July 1916 in Adelaide. His name on his enlistment papers was “Charles”. He landed in England on Boxing Day 1916 and left from France in April 1917.

He was with the 10th Battalion at Polygon Wood when he was reported missing on the 21st of September 1917, and nothing more was heard of him until a letter was received from a Private Philipp Joseph Heinjus, notifying of his death in action.

Carl had been killed by a shell in action near the Menin Road, 10 kms from the village of Passchendaele.

Carl’s body was eventually found and buried in the Bedford House British Cemetery, Zillebeke, 1 mile South of Ypres.
