Son of George Odell and Charlotte Odell nee Brinklow of Tingrath, England. Husband of Minnie Odell nee Jacobson. John and Minnie married during 1914c but later deserted him.

Commenced return to Australia on 20 November 1918 aboard HT Suevic disembarking at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane.
