Private Walter Thomas Lidbury (Service No:6347) enlisted in the AIF on 3 August 1916 and was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion on 29 December 1916 when he embarked from Fremantle for Devonport on board HMAT Persic A34. Private Lidbury was WiA in France on 1 October 1918 (GSW to his foot) and embarked from Liverpool for Fremantle on board HMT Czar - trans-shipping at Alexandria to HMAS Dongola to complete the journey home. Private Lidbury was Discharged on 24 June 1919. Brother Frank also served in WWI (Service No:754).
Walter was born in London, England in 1885, third of four children of John Dalton Lidbury (b1852 in London, England) and Mary Ann Whitmore (b1852 in London, England). John (an Insurance Clerk) and Mary (a Shop Assistant) married in 1882 in Cubbington, Warwickshire and settled in London where they raised their family and John worked as an Insurance/Assurance Clerk. Walter served with the Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers) before immigrating in 1909, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Ortona and giving his occupation as 'Farming". With older brother Frank, Walter took up land at Donnelly River via Manjimup and in 1911 was a Farmer when he married Helen Jane Toye (b1867 in London, England) - Helen was a School Assistant in London when she immigrated in 1909, arriving in Albany, WA on board the Persic. The couple settled at Donnelly River where they raised their family and Walter was a Farmer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. Following his Discharge in 1919, Walter and Helen settled in Fremantle, WA and Walter was a 'Trainee', retiring following Helen's death in 1939. Walter served with the ACMF in WWII - having given his DoB as 1890 (Lance Corporal; Service No:W18606). Walter died in 1964.
