Son of John Urquhart and Margaret Urquhart nee Hutchison of 'Craigston', Coppin Street, East Malvern, Victoria.
Brother of Angus McBeath Urquhart who returned to Australia on 5 August 1916 having served with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade; Herbert Sinclair Urquhart who died of wound on 15 April 1918 while serving with the 21st Battalion and is buried in the Vignacourt British Cemetery, Plot 1, Row A, Grave 24
12 February 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria, with the 37th Battalion and with the rank of Private.
24 November 1916 - promoted to Corporal
1 February 1917 - promoted to Lance Sergeant in the field
30 June 1917 - promoted to 2nd Lieutenant
12 October 1918 - transferred to the 39th Battalion
22 July 1919 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Morvada disembarking on 25 August 1919

9 October 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District
During 1920c Torquil married Helen Agnes Stewart in Victoria.
