From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 70a, 133, V80809 & V12204 Sergeant Roy Herbert Edmunds of Canterbury & Windsor, Victoria had been employed as a grocer when he enlisted for War Service on the 30th of January 1915 and was allocated to reinforcements for the Australian Army Medical Corps 1st AIF.

Roy was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 25th of June. Following his arrival, Roy was taken on strength with the 1st Australian General Hospital, with which his service would be continuous until he was deemed no longer fit for active service and was boarded as an invalid.

Departing Egypt, Roy began his return to Australia on the 13th of October, and following his arrival back in Melbourne, he was granted his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his return to civilian life on the 28th of January 1916.

On the 29th of September 1916, Roy again enlisted for service with the 1st AIF, and was allocated to Home Service, during which he would be on strength with Base Records Corps in Victoria, until he was again discharged from the Australian Military Forces on the 20th of October 1918 at his own request.

With the start of a Second World War, Roy again sort enlistment with the Australian Military Forces on the 5th of October 1939 and was accepted for Service within Australia.

Taken on strength with the 12th Garrison Battalion, Roy would serve until he was deemed to be medically unfit for duty and was discharged from the Australian Military Forces on the 24th of December 1940.

Again, Roy would re-enlist for further service on the 18th of March 1941, and was allocated to 3rd Military Districts Records, with which he would then serve with continuously until the end of the War. With hostilities now over, Roy was evacuated due to sickness, and was admitted into the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg), and whilst still under treatment, Roy’s premature death, at the age of 50, occurred on the 15th of August 1946.

Following his passing, Roy, a veteran of the ‘Great War’, and who had managed to serve with the Australian Military Forces, again, for the duration of a Second War, was laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
