Son of John Varney and Fanny Varney nee Park of Lock Street, Coburg, Victoria. Brother of Hector Edward Varney who returned to Australia on 23 November 1918  having served with the 45th Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 29 August 1919 aboard HT Kanowna disembarking on 15 October 1919
