Major Paterson was the first chaplain on the first Australian hospital ship, on which he made two trips to England. He accompanied just on
to 500 wounded Australians back to Sydney from the front. The sad news has been received at the Parramatta home of the death of the first born, Sapper S.S. Paterson, the centre of the three brave lads shown in the above photograph, with their much-esteemed father. Lieut. F. A. Paterson has also been reported wounded.

REV. JOHN PATERSON.

The New South Wales General Assembly, Presbyterian Church of Australia, has elected Rev. John Paterson, of Parramatta, Moderator, in succession to the Rev, James Goudle. Born at Bannockburn, the new Moderator was educated at the High School, Stirling and at Glasgow University. He attended the Free Church College, Glasgow, and was licensed by the Presbytery of Stirling. Coming to Now South Wales In 1893, he was appointed to the charge of St. Stephen's, Sydney, during the illness of the late Rev. Dr. 'Steel. From St Stephen's he went to Parramatta in November, 1893, and is still in charge there. Apart from his parochial work as Minister, tho new Moderator has held various offices in the Presbyterian Church. He was for a considerable period clerk of the presbytery of tho Hawkesbury, and convener of the assembly's committee on religion and public morals. He is at present a member of the board of directors of the Burnside Presbyterian Orphan Homes, and convener of the admissions committee of that board, also deputy convener of the foreign missions committee, and convener of the evangelistic committee In the absence of the Rev. Alexander Clark, who is away on military duty.

Three of the Rev. Mr Paterson's sons are at the front doing their duty as Australian soldiers. The Moderator himself has served in the great war as a military chaplain. He returned to Australia from England on a ship bringing sick and wounded soldiers.​
